Tips For Flying Out of San Juan International Airport

I have cruised out of San Juan, Puerto Rico numerous times and for those who have experienced the airport you know disorganized would be an understatement. Over time, I have gotten better at dealing with the experience that is Luis Munoz Marin International Airport. Here is a list of five tips for those you cruising or thinking about cruising out of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

If there are more than two cruise ships disembarking the same day as you make every effort to stay the night in San Juan. The airport tends to get overwhelmed and enjoying an evening stroll in Old San Juan is a lot more appealing than worrying if you will make it through security in time.

When leaving the cruise ship grab a porter as soon as possible. I usually grab porters but this time I was able to set a personal best time. From the time I walked off the ship for the last time until I was in a taxi heading away from the cruise terminal was just under nineteen minutes.

When you get to the San Juan airport, make sure you get your baggage inspected by the department of agriculture before finding the line to check you luggage. I don’t know how many people waited in a 30 minute line only to find out they had to leave the line to head back to get their USDA inspection sticker.

Getting through security will most likely take forever. SJU has got to be one of the worst airports I have visited when it comes to going through airport security, do yourself a favor and allow yourself 2 hours (for just that line) to be on the safe side. Although you can catch a 12 o’clock flight, I would never book anything before 2 p.m. just to give myself enough time to not be a nervous wreck.

If you have a late flight have lunch in the city before heading out to the airport. While there are places to eat inside the airport, the options are extremely limited and not very good. Also the eateries are all fast food, there are no sit down restaurants. If you aren’t scheduled to leave until 4 o’clock or so your time would be much better spent sitting down at “Mia Casita” than standing in the hour-long line (that’s no exaggeration) for a subway sandwich
