Monday Mailbag: April 25, 2011 Edition

Hello everyone, welcome to another edition of the Monday Mailbag.  This week I have a couple of questions concerning deadlines and cruising.  The first question is about arriving at the cruise port at the last minute while the second is about booking a “true” last minute cruise.  Hopefully, these user submitted questions prove to be helpful to you guys and remember to keep the questions coming.

How late can I arrive at the cruise port?

I will be sailing out of New Orleans on the Norwegian Spirit this coming June.  My ship leaves at 5p.m. but my plane doesn’t land until about 2 p.m.  Will I be able to make the ship on time or should I try to schedule an earlier flight?

This is a tough one because although I would love to, I have never sailed out of New Orleans.  What I can tell you is that ideally you will want to arrive at the cruise terminal no later than 1.5-2 hours before its time for your cruise to sail.  Although you can show up a little bit later 2 hours is a good time to aim for.

Now assuming it takes about 45 minutes to get from Louis Armstrong Airport to the cruise terminal that means when your plane lands you will have about 15-30 minutes to retrieve your bags before you run up against that 2 hour cap.  However, like I mentioned you can get there later but depending on weather or any other unanticipated delays you are cutting it extremely close.  If it were me I would try to fly down the night before, but if that isn’t possible the latest I would want to land would be somewhere in the noon to 1 o’clock range.

What is the latest I can book a cruise?

I heard that the cheapest way to book a cruise are the last minute cruises they sell at the cruise port on embarkation day.  Is it true that you can buy those last minute cruises pennies on the dollar?

Unfortunately as far as I know you cannot buy last minute cruises at the cruise terminal.  In the past driving to a cruise terminal with a trunk full of luggage with plans on taking  a cruise may have been an option, since 911 happened that option has changed.

While it is still possible to book cruises with as little as 24 hours’ notice the true drive up option seems to have gone the way of the dodo bird.  While there is a myth going around the internet that the deadline to book a cruise is 3 days prior this is nothing more than the internet version of an urban legend.

While my admittedly limited research shows there was a time period following 911 where homeland security indeed required a 72 hour cutoff time, since then this deadline has been relaxed.  I have heard of people booking a cruise as close as 48 or even 24 hours prior to sailing time but this all depends on the individual cruise line.  My advice would be to call around to the cruise lines you are considering to see what the actual cutoff time would be.

While it is true that booking at the proverbial 11th hour will probably net you the cheapest price possible, this is really only an option for those that live within driving distance to a cruise port.  Those of us who need to fly to cruise terminals would be absolutely killed by the cost of booking a last minute flight to the cruise port.

Easy to Find Last Minute Gifts for Cruisers

There are just two shopping days left before Christmas. While most of us have already finished our holiday shopping, some people have been putting off shopping until the very last minute. Typically the people we shop for last fall into one of two categories, we don’t know what to buy them or we really don’t like them. While I can’t help you latter, I will do what I can to help you find a last minute gift for the hard to buy for cruiser.

Cruisers are odd people (for the most part), which lead to “normal” people not knowing what to buy us. The truth is most people who don’t understand us make things to complicated. In my experience, cruisers are very easy to shop for; all you have to do is get something cruise related. For those that have no idea what I mean and are too lazy to use google I have compiled a short list. While this list is fairly basic, I only wanted to include things that can be obtained on short notice.

Gifts that are directly related to cruising – These can be ordered online through the cruise lines, airlines or a travel agent. You can print out a symbolic representation of the gift to be stuffed into a fancy envelope with a funny story. If done right, no one will know you did it two days before Christmas:

  • Airline gift certificates
  • Cruise gift certificates
  • Drink coupons for their favorite cruise line
  • Bon Voyage Gifts

Reading about cruising – You can find these next items almost anywhere. In fact, some online retailers are even still offering next day shipping in time for Christmas Eve:

  • Travel guide books
  • Magazine subscriptions

Easy to find but useful gifts – All of these should be available at the mall or even the local Wal-Mart. They should all be relatively inexpensive and readily available even at this late date:

  • Shaving kit
  • Cosmetic bag
  • Packing organizers
  • Neck pillow
  • Eye shades
  • Travel clock
  • Sewing kit
  • Cloth jewelry bag

Help them to remember their next cruise – After awhile cruises tend to blend together. These ideas are gifts that keep on giving, by helping your cruiser remember which cruise was which:

  • Digital camera
  • 35mm camera
  • Camera supplies
  • Disposable underwater camera for snorkeling
  • Leather travel journal

Gifts that show your thoughtfulness – The last group of gifts are very useful but I always forget to purchase them. If any of my friends decided to buy any of these for me it would seem like they really put a lot of thought into it and genuinely took an interest in my hobby:

  • Binoculars
  • Flask
  • Money Belt
  • Currency converter
  • Multi-time zone watch

As you can see from the list, none of these presents are unusual or hard to find. So the next time you need to buy a cruiser a gift don’t be intimidated, we aren’t hard to please. The reality is if you want to make a cruiser happy, buy them something they can use on a cruise, or if you really love them buy them a cruise (just kidding but not really).

Fanmail Friday: December 5th Edition

I have booked three cabins for a family cruise. Due to age restrictions, some of us will be in different cabins than were booked. Will I be able to get the keys fixed to open the doors where each guest is actually staying?

Yes, all you have to do is go to the pursers desk once you are onboard the cruise ship. They will be more than happy to make any adjustments needed. If you are unfamiliar with what pursers are, it can best be explained as the ships customer service department. The purser’s desk is the place to go to pay your on board account, make complaints or just ask questions. Most ships have multiple pursers on duty to assist you at all times.

I live in Florida and can drive to any port in three hours or less. Can I drive to the cruise ship docks and get a really good last minute price?

While that was possible in the past, those days are over. Since the September 11th attacks, many rules of travel have changed. Homeland security has put into place rules that prohibit the selling of empty cabins the day the ship sails. In an effort to improve security, cruise lines have a booking cutoff time of 48 to 72 hours prior to embarkation. You should probably contact the cruise line directly to find out the exact cutoff time. The good news is assuming you can find a room three days prior to leaving you will probably fine a ridiculously great deal.

We are taking out first cruise this spring. The ship gets back into port at 7:00 am. What is the earliest flight home that we can book?

I wouldn’t book a flight home any earlier than noon. The ship is listed as being back in port at seven o’clock but you will still need to clear customs and disembark. Basically, there is no foolproof method to accurately predict what time you can leave the ship. You should also allow a little bit of “fudge time” just in case something goes wrong. After all, you will need to find your luggage, clear immigration and customs and get to the airport.
