Five of My Favorite Cruiseship Cocktails

Recently I began researching which cruise I can take in March. Scouring the Internet in search of the best deals and the ideal itinerary put me in full cruise mode. Eventually, my mind started to wander and before I knew it I was completely immersed in a Caribbean daydream. While I figuratively drifted out to sea, my psyche made every effort to artificially re-create the feeling I get when on a cruise ship. Naturally I started to think about this delicious cruise ship cocktails.

So, I have done is gone through my mental Rolodex in an effort to list some of my favorite cruise ship drinks. If I listed all of my favorites this post will probably be about three pages long so I decided to limit this list to only five. I included the recipes for these drinks as best as I could. I actually did obtain some of the drink recipes on the cruise ships, the others were found on the Internet.

Since I had to limit this list to only five many of my favorites did not make the cut. Long Island ice tea, Miami Vice, Lava flow, and a bevy of martinis were excluded. That being said I’d love for you guys to share some of your favorite cruise ship with the rest of us.

Superbowl Sunday Rum Punch

Unless you have been living in a cave (not that there is anything wrong with that) or you on a cruise around the world (in which case you probably don’t care) you probably realize that tomorrow is “Superbowl Sunday”. Many of you may already know that I am a huge football fan and although my team (The Pittsburgh Steelers) isn’t playing in the big game, Superbowl Sunday is still better than Christmas for me. Being that I like to pretend like I an amateur chef I take this as a great opportunity to get into the kitchen to cook a feast big enough to feed a parking lot full of hungry tail-gaters. Naturally, with all of the food that gets consumed comes a wee bit of alcohol. That alcohol is what brings me to the subject of this blog post, a new drink recipe.

Now, when watching the Superbowl I never plan on having people over. I don’t invite anyone or anything like that, to paraphrase Field of Dreams “if you make it they will come”. So, in addition to cooking a ton of food I also make sure to have a lot of drinks. Of course I pick the staples like beer and wine I always make a special drink. This year the drink I will be making is Caribbean Rum Punch.

1 Cup Bacardi 151 Proof Rum
1/2 Cup Dark Rum (Myers)
1/4 Cup Malibu Rum
2 1/2 Cups Pineapple Juice
2 1/2 Cups Orange Juice
1/4 Cup Lime Juice
3 Tblsp Grenadine
Ice Cubes

Of course you can either make this by the glass or scale it up to make a bowl of the punch. Also if the 151 is a little heavy (as it is for most people) just substitute a light colored rum in its place.

The Only Category of Hurricane to Look Forward to

My Brain Scan After Drinking a Few of the Strong Ones

Usually we as cruisers will do whatever it takes to avoid a hurricane.  However, there is one instance when a hurricane shouldn’t be avoided but instead embraced (and consumed).  With the increase of hurricane activity in the Atlantic region I figure this week’s cruise cocktail should be something appropriate.  Here is a a recipe for one of my favorite drinks.  In fact I am including two hurricane recipes.  The first is a pretty standard hurricane, the kind you want to sip while sitting on your deck on a breezy day.  The second is more for when you are stranded indoors and the roads are washed away.

Standard Hurricane:

  • 3/4 oz. Rum
  • 3/4 oz. Meyers Dark Rum
  • Apricot Brandy
  • Splash of Grenadine
  • Sour Mix

Shake with ice.  Serve in a hurricane glass and enjoy.

This one isn’t for the feint of heart.  I first had this in a small little restaurant in Old San Juan (sadly it is no longer there).  The waitress must have liked me for one reason or another because she kept bringing them over to our table.  She only charged us for about one-third of what we drank.  Now that I think about it, that may be the reason why the restaurant is no longer there.

Category 5 Hurricane:

  • 1/2 oz. Vodka
  • 1/2 oz. Tequila
  • 1/2 oz. Rum
  • 1/2 oz. Bourbon
  • 1/2 oz. Gin
  • Sour Mix
  • Splash of Fruit Juice

Shake Vodka, Tequila, Rum, Bourbon and Gin with ice. Pour in a hurricane glass.  Fill the rest of the glass with sweet and sour mix and a splash of the juice, stir.  Keep the rest of the juice handy in case you need to water it down a bit.
