A Stark Reminder that Crime Never Takes a Vacation

This past Sunday 17 Celebrity cruise passengers were robbed at gunpoint while on a tour in St. Kitts. Fortunately no one was harmed but I’m sure the 16 adults and 1 child that were involved in the incident will be irreparably affected. While on a ship sponsored tour called “Essential St. Kitts” the tour bus encountered a blockade in the road on their way to “Brimstone Hill”. The gunmen set a trap in the form of a fallen tree in the center of the road creating a makeshift blockade. When the bus driver exited the bus to remove the obstruction , two gunmen ran out of the bushes and robbed the passengers. After-wards the perpetrators retreated to the cover of the woods to make their getaway.

Now I understand that some people will make untrue statements about how unsafe these islands are and denigrate anyone “stupid” enough to want to visit, but the truth is “crime happens”. These sorts of things happen whether you are on vacation or not and whether you are in St. Kitts or the Big Apple. You could say it’s (bad) luck of the draw whether anything like this ever happens to you, hopefully it never will.

So, if you are looking for someone to start banging the drum for a boycott of St. Kitts you should probably leave this website and try searching on “Google”, I’m sure someone has already started a mini-site or “Facebook” group about it. Instead I will use this incident as an opportunity to once again underscore the importance of vacation safety. Oftentimes when people are enjoying leisure time they let their guard down, that obviously wasn’t the case in this incident but it can still serve as a reminder.

Let me emphatically state there was nothing any of these passengers could have done to prevent this from happening. However, I also want to point out that once things were set in motion everyone did the right thing, they gave the gunmen what they wanted. It has been reported that in the robbery the passengers lost jewelry, money and cell phones but no one was hurt. No one tried to be a tough guy or a hero, everyone remained level-headed and they all realized they weren’t going to lose anything that couldn’t easily be replaced. This is the single most important thing to remember there is no material item that cannot be replaced.

Celebrity Cruises Use of the iPad

Cruise ships and the ipad go together like chocolate and peanut butter.  Okay maybe not, but Celebrity Cruises has recognized just how well Apple’s newest device can be utilized onboard its ships.  Onboard the Celebrity Eclipse the iPad is already in use at its specialty restaurant Qsine.  Celebrity uses the iPad as a display for the menu and wine list at its specialty restaurant.  Now Celebrity has expanded its use of the iPad as a way to showcase its art.

On August 15th Celebrity Cruises began using the iPad on the Celebrity Solstice to provide information on their extensive art collection.  Celebrity has a custom made app that will allow you to touch a piece of artwork to receive information on its location on the ship, title, fame, description and other information.  This app won’t be available in the iTunes app store and will only be available onboard.

This all rolled out on the Solstice on Sunday the 15th and will be available on the Eclipse and Equinox starting on August 21st.  I love technology about as much as I love cruising and I am really excited about how Celebrity is at the forefront of blending the two together.

Can you think of any other ways the cruise industry can use the iPad to improve your cruising experience?

Baltimore Gets Another Cruise Ship in 2011

Those who live in the Southern and Western portions of the country are spoiled by nearly limited options when it comes to cruising, and yes the rest of us are jealous.  You guys not only get more options but you also get to save money on airfare allowing you to potentially take more cruises for the same amount of money.

If you a cruiser who happens to live in the Northeast portion of the United States you are faced with the same problem as me, limited cruises leaving from within driving range.  The other option is to spend hundreds of dollars per person on airfare and possibly a hotel making getting to the ship cost about 80% as much as the cruise itself.  Well, slowly but surely we are getting more options and recently we just got another one.  It has been announced that starting in 2011 Celebrity will be home porting another ship in Baltimore for fall and winter cruises.

Celebrity Century Baltimore Gets Another Cruise Ship in 2011

“We’re very excited to welcome the Celebrity Century cruise ship to Baltimore beginning next year in fall and winter of 2011,” said Richard Scher, spokesman of the Maryland Port Administration.

The Celebrity Century will be joining the Celebrity Mercury which currently sails a 12 day Caribbean itinerary from the port of Baltimore.  Carnival Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean also currently have ships home ported in Baltimore meaning that by November 2011 there will be 113 cruises home ported there.  A few years ago there were fewer than 30 cruises leaving from the city.

While the refurbished Celebrity Century will never be mistaken for the Oasis of the Seas it is a nice little ship, which (like all Celebrity cruises) has great service.  With the numbers of cruisers sailing out of Baltimore Constantly Climbing and our ability to sail out of both New York and New Jersey it’s clear that the cruise industry hasn’t forgot about us living in the Northeast United States.
