Fanmail Friday: August 6th Edition

This fanmail Friday answers a few questions that I received via email.  A couple of them are pretty common questions with one being pretty specialized but interesting nonetheless. As always if you have any questions feel free to email them to me using the contact form on this website.

Usually when do you have to be back onboard the ship?  If I am set to be in port from 1-10pm what time do I have to come back?

Each night you will receive a daily ship program which details everything going on for the following day.  In that program it will list the time you are set to be in port and will also tell you the all-aboard time.  You only have to be back onboard by the time given, however in order to be sure you don’t miss the ship its best to either be back onboard the ship or at least within walking distance within one hour of the ships departure time.

the clock Fanmail Friday: August 6th Edition

The reason I say one hour is because I have seen instances of taxis breaking down on the way back to the port.  In fact, on my last cruise we picked up a group of cruisers that were stranded on the side of the road.  Most ports have shops, cafes or other activities right by the dock so you can still maximize your time in port but from a safe distance.  Anytime I need to take a tender back to the ship I usually shoot for 30 minutes before the last tender is set to depart.

I broke my tibia and am now on crutches will this ruin my cruise?

Although it will of course be harder to get around than if you hadn’t broken your leg, there is no reason why your cruise will be ruined.  Cruise ships are very good at catering to passengers with disabilities, even if it’s only crutches.  Although ships are huge these days, elevators are usually very conveniently located and the crew will be very accommodating.  Depending on which type of cast you have, water activities may be out of the question but that shouldn’t ruin a cruise, there are tons of activities that you will still be able to enjoy.

Going into port will probably present the biggest challenge.  If I were in your shoes (or cast) I would get a wheelchair while in port.  Depending on where you are going it may be difficult to navigate the terrain on crutches.  Another option could be booking sightseeing tours since you can usually find one that involves being shuttled around rather than you doing the walking.

Is there a weight limit for the Oasis of the Seas zip line?

Yes, every zip line has a weight limit.  I can’t tell you for sure what the weight limit of that particular zip line is but I can assure you that it does have one.  While I doubt there will be an actual scale there to get your exact weight please do yourself a favor and don’t lie.  Although that zip line does look like great fun, no amount of fun is worth putting yourself in danger.

I know that the Oasis of the Seas is the biggest cruise ship but will the Allure of the Seas be bigger since it is newer?

No.  Actually they are sister ships.  Although the Oasis was the first one built the Allure will be nearly identical.

Oasis of the Seas:

Passenger Capacity: 5,400 double occupancy
Gross Tonnage: 220,000
Staterooms: 2,700
Decks: 16 high
Length: 1,187′
Max Beam: 184.40′
Draft: 30′

Allure of the Seas:

Passenger Capacity: 5,400 double occupancy
Gross Tonnage: 220,000
Staterooms: 2,700
Decks: 16 high
Length: 1,187′
Max Beam: 184.40′
Draft: 30′

Same size, same capacity, basically the same ship.  The only difference will be superficial things like decor and of course the crew.

Fan Mail Friday: July 16th Edition

its been a while since I did a Fan Mail Friday but figured it was time that I started doing it again.  Here are a few questions that I recently received in the mail that I figured may of use to some of you.

I’m going on my first cruise in August but was worried about getting sea-sick.  I was planning on taking Dramamine but am wondering if I can drink with it?

Truthfully, sea-sickness isn’t nearly the concern that many first time cruisers think it will be.  These ships are so large that unless the seas are especially rough you probably won’t feel the rocking of the ship.  However, if you are someone who is susceptible to motion sickness taking precautions may not be such a bad idea.   As far as Dramamine and drinking goes I would probably go in a different direction.  Dramamine by itself may cause drowsiness and combining it with alcohol may be a bad idea.  If you want something that helps prevent motion sickness yet allows you to consume alcohol my recommendation would be to use seasickness wrist bands Fan Mail Friday: July 16th Edition.

Sea-Bands Fan Mail Friday: July 16th Edition work through the use of acupuncture.  It seems that by applying the right amount of pressure to a certain spot on your arms sea-bands are able to help alleviate signs of motion sickness.  Personally, I never get sea-sick but many people whose opinion I respect swear by these. If you want to read more about ways to prevent sea-sickness here is a post I wrote, about a year ago.

I hear phone calls made on board the ship can get really expensive.  If the call is kept to less than a minute will it still be charged?

Before I answer your question please allow me to make a suggestion, wait until you are on shore to make any phone calls to home.  It costs upwards of 7 dollars a minute to make a ship to shore call while cruising.  If you wait until you get to port you can make that very same call for like 5 cents a minute.  Do yourself a favor and wait to make that call if at all possible.

As for the question you asked, of course you will be charged.  Any time a call is made the total talk time is rounded up to the next minute.  In other words if you talk for 33 seconds you will be charged for a full minute. If you talk for 3 minutes and 2 seconds you will be charged for 4 minutes.  Not that it would be practical but I can see scenarios where people would make constant 59 second calls back to the U.S. if there were no charges for the first minute.

I was thinking about bringing my laptop on my cruise with me.  Do cruise ships have Wi-Fi?

Yes, most cruise ships do have Wi-Fi internet access for the use of passengers, but it is generally not free.  In fact, the cost of at sea internet connectivity can get pretty expensive.  You will need to purchase a package once you board the ship which will allocate a certain amount of minutes you will have access to the Wi-Fi.  These packages cost roughly 30-65 cents per minute.  For example a 2 hour block of internet time may cost you 60 bucks, not cheap.  You should also know that not all ships have in-cabin access but will require you to be at a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Have any cruise ships canceled their cruises due to the oil spill?  I will be cruising out of Miami later this month and I am worried about my cruise being canceled.

To my knowledge no cruise lines have canceled any sailings because of the oil spill.  I would think the only ones that would be affected by the oil spill are the ones going out of either New Orleans or Galveston.  So, even if sailings were being canceled you should be okay.

My Freedom Cruise – Nassau Part 1

After a great nights sleep, we awoke Sunday morning in the port of Nassau, Bahamas. Since it had been a while since I had been to the Bahamas we were extremely anxious to get off the cruise ship but first things first. When I was young I always heard “breakfast is the foundation for a great day”, so being the momma’s boy that I am we headed up to the Lido deck for breakfast. The only problem is I am extremely picky when it comes to what I put in my mouth. Normally I enjoy the omelets served at the Lido but the line was very long and we wanted to get off the ship so I skipped the eggs. Instead I had a bacon, two bagels and then topped off my tank with fruit. The Buddha belly was appeased and it was time to depart the ship.

We chose to do something a bit out of the ordinary in Nassau and opted for a ship excursion.  Today we would be visiting the mega- resort, Atlantis.  Although I had seen Atlantis from afar and also on television, I had never been to there so this was pretty exciting for me.  As for the girls as long as there is a beach where they are going, all is well.  The excursion was about ninety dollars per person.  For this price we got transportation to and from the resort, admission and use of the resorts facilities and beaches as well as a lunch voucher usable at a select group of food stands.  In my honest opinion it wasn’t a very good deal and if given the option I probably would not do this again.  However, this was a last minute decision so there was no opportunity to find a cheaper alternative.

Upon exiting the ship we grouped up with the rest of the passengers heading the resort, afterwards we boarded vans which shuttled us to the Paradise Island (where the resort is located).  It was a short ride (maybe 10 minutes) along the way our driver told us a bit about the island and kept us laughing all the way.  One of the things I love best about the islands is the friendliness of the drivers.  They all do a great job making you feel like welcome guests in their homes. When we finally arrived at the Atlantis we were assigned a guide who walked us around the grounds telling us about the resort.  Places of interest were the casino, pools, aquarium and of course the beach (our excursion did not include the waterpark).

The resort is positively massive, in fact we didn’t even see the grounds in their entirety.  But, what we did see is enough that I have promised myself a return to the resort for an extended stay (at some point).

I’m running a bit short on time since I have to work on a project for work but I’ll post more about Nassau later.
